Role

Principal Design Lead

Year

2021–2024

For nearly 3 years at Havas—Inviqa, I led a collaborative effort between the London and Paris design teams as Principal Design Lead. We spearheaded a comprehensive website redesign for Carmignac, a prominent European asset management firm with over €30 billion in assets. This global project catered to a diverse audience across 13 countries and 7 languages, encompassing both professional investors (B2B) and individual investors (B2C). The new website strategy placed a strong emphasis on Carmignac's commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. It also aimed to bolster Carmignac's brand identity and generate new leads for their fund managers.

Challenge.

The external rebrand necessitated a complete digital transformation. This required rebuilding the platform from the ground up, ensuring it adhered to stringent regulatory requirements across all local markets. Robust security features would be paramount to combat digital fraud. To ensure stakeholder alignment, every strategic and design decision would demand a rigorous review and approval process, including input from Edouard Carmignac and Eric Helderlé (CEO/co-founders), alongside other senior partners.

Strategy.

The team's efforts were aligned through clear roadmaps, regular workshops, and agile 2-week sprints, ensuring Carmignac's brand refresh goals were met. Internal and client reviews maintained alignment throughout the process. This required prototypes at key stages to facilitate user testing, allowing us to gather valuable feedback and refine the design.

To streamline the design process and elevate Carmignac's digital experience, we migrated from Sketch to Figma and built a brand-new design system and library. This system enabled the efficient creation of various page layouts, featuring accessible and user-friendly interfaces for key functionalities. These sections of the website included a new strategic landing page tailored for both B2B and B2C audiences, alongside fund listings, detailed fund data, investment simulators, editorial insights, and dynamic campaign landing pages.

Impact.

We delivered digital products that provided the best experience to showcase complex financial products, while managing the needs of compliance and risk across multiple markets. Upon launching several initial site sections across 2021–2024, a benchmark report was conducted. This preliminary analysis proved invaluable for validation and comparing our KPIs.

Live site: Carmignac

Engagement rate

110sec

Our data reveals a significant improvement in user engagement on the home page. Compared to the industry benchmark of 26 seconds for bank home pages in Q4 2022 (source: Contentsquare Report on Digital Experience for Financial Sectors, 2023), Q1 2023 user sessions averaged 1 minute and 50 seconds, which is also a huge increase in user engagement for Carmignac.

Scroll rate

77%

Industry benchmarks for the financial sector indicate an average scroll rate of 54.6% in Q4 2022 (source: Contentsquare Report on Digital Experience for Financial Sectors, 2023). This suggests that slightly more than half of users typically explore beyond the first screen on financial institution websites. The newly designed Carmignac website, however, demonstrates a compelling user experience. Our analytics data reveals a significantly higher average scroll rate of 77% in Q1 2023. This represents an increase in user engagement, signifying that visitors are finding our content both informative and valuable.

Bounce rate

15.7%

The financial services industry sees an average bounce rate of 29.2% on home pages, indicating that nearly a third of visitors leave without engaging (source: Contentsquare Report on Digital Experience for Financial Sectors, 2023). Our website is outperforming this benchmark, boasting a significantly lower bounce rate of 15.7% on our homepages in Q1 2023. This represents a remarkable improvement, suggesting that visitors find our homepage content engaging and informative.

Feedback.

In his time working on Carmignac, Ben has not only been an excellent Design Lead, but also a true partner.

I have come to depend on his point of view and perspective across all aspects of UI design work. Ben has been there during our largest pieces of work over the past few years - from launching our new brand, to the creation of our new digital product design system. Along the way, Ben has provided key insights that ensured the new re-brand would be fit for digital and for accessibility. He ensured our new design system would have the necessary scalability to work for a variety of applications. He has been relentless in always pushing the standard of design work - from the smallest buttons to the complete redesign of our fund pages.

Ben is fantastic at design origination, being an inspiration to his team (without being overbearing) and also having the experience to speak confidently and strategically about design work. He’s great at providing the necessary rationale to prove that the work is more than just a pretty image, but rather is a living, breathing interactive experience.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with Ben and would strongly recommend him. He’s great.
